Finding affordable health insurance in Florida is not as complicated as some people think.
Truth is that rates are regulated by law and it doesn’t matter where you purchase your Florida health insurance plan the price will be the same. The insurance premium is determined by the insurance company and regulated by the Florida Department of Financial Services. Any premium increases must be submitted to the FLDFS for approval. New health care reform laws require health insurance plans to cover certain medical services. Since the government is not subsidizing these additional costs insurance companies will simply pass on the cost to the consumers. So it is important to understand what your plans covers and what what your financial responsibility will be in the event that something happens and you require medical services.
Medical care is expensive…there are no and’s, if’s, or but’s about it. As long as costs for medical care keep skyrocketing Insurance premiums are are sure to follow. So it is important to manage that risk. Forget about what insurance is like in other countries…you don’t live there. Forget about free health insurance or subsidies unless you earn less the 400% of the federal poverty level (about $88,000 per year for a family of four).
require an 80% medical ration for individual health insurance in Florida and small group FL health insurance plans (less than 50 employees). Large group health insurance plans are required to have an MLR of 85%. You can read more about health care reform and how it will affect you here:
Individual health insurance in Florida is offered by several insurance carriers. I’ve looked at all of them and I am appointed by most of them. Everybody is offering pretty much the same thing. Sure there are going to differences in the contract or policy but seriously are you going to read it? I doubt it. Most people don’t even read the benefit summaries I send them. At some point you are going to take someone’s advice. It will either be your doctor, an insurance company employee, or an agent. Unfortunately you won’t won’t if they were right until something happens or you develop a pre-existing condition…then it’s too late. That is why it is important you find someone knowledgeable about health insurance to help you choose a health a health insurance plan. Personally, I think the best plans are offered by:
Which one really depends on you! Your age, health, zip code, etc. are all factors that will impact your rate. Instant health insurance quotes are a great tool but you still have to get through underwriting. Even not having a current Florida Health insurance plan when you apply will increase your rate by up to 25% with some carriers.
Small group health insurance in Florida is guaranteed issue and available to employer groups of 1 to 49 employees. Yes if you are self employed you can get a small group plan. You will have to meet certain requirements in order to be eligible. I do not recommend the group of one plans…they are simply too expensive. If you need to get a group health insurance plan because you have a pre-existing condition then you should look into the the “pre-existing condition insurance plan” offered by the government. Their website is http://www.pcip.gov
Insurance premiums for small group health plans are going to vary based on the ages and to a certain extent the health of the group. Lately the most competitive rates have been coming from Humana, AvMed, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. As far as I know instant quotes are not available for small group health plans in Florida, so you will have to contact an independent agent or each carrier to get a quote. A good agent will get you quotes from all the best carriers, make recommendations, enroll, and help you manage your health plan. The biggest thing is a good agent will save you lots of time. How much is your time worth?
Lots of choices!!! Sure you could do this on your own but you’ll need to read a lot of really boring publications. Don’t waste your time. All of these plans are highly regulated. Which one is best for you is going to depend on what medical care you need or think you may need, how flexibility you want in choosing medical providers, and the coverage area you like. Really the best thing to do is talk to an independent agent. The plans I recommend most are AARP Medicare Supplements, Preferred Care Partners Medicare Advantage Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Plans. I chose these plans because they have their affordability, networks, benefits, customer service, and because my clients are happy with them.
