If you go to the Florida Department of Insurance’s website you can find a list of all the health insurance companies offering health insurance in Florida. The last time I counted there were over 20 different insurance carriers offering individual health insurance in Florida. Problem is that some of them aren’t very good. Below is a list of health insurance companies that I think are offering the best health insurance in Florida.
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Humana – HumanaOne
- Golden Rule / United HealthOne (a United Healthcare Company)
- Preferred Medical Plan
Most of the insurers above offer similar plans. Sure, there are going to be some differences but over all they are pretty mch the same. I think the larger companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, etc. give you more value for your insurance dollar. Their premiums are lower, their benefits are better, and I believe that because of their size they are able to negotiate better rates with medical providers. Their size gives them economies of scale, and bargaining power…as a result you save money.
The most competitive rates lately for individual and family health plans have been coming from Cigna, Humana, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Avmed also has good rates , but they are not available in all areas. Rural areas have a problem with provider networks, and Blue Cross is often the best option option. Sure you can go out of network with most plans…but it will cost you a lot more. There really isn’t any reason to go to an out of network provider…unless it’s an emergency. If it is an emergency then everything should be applied to your in-network deductible.
Avmed, Humana, Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield typically have the best small group rates. Rates can vary drastically based on the options that are available. Make sure you are comparing plans with the same levels of coverage. Each carrier has a multitude of options available.
